Known as the Catch 22 of the Iraqi War, Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk is in a nutshell the disconnect between the war at home and the war abroad. Billy Lynn is part of the 8-man Bravo Squad fighting in Iraq. After the brief but eventful “Battle of Al-Ansakar Canal”. The squad survives and return to the US where they are hailed as war heroes. But what does this entail? How would it not only affect the troops but also citizens at home?
This novel symbolizes brotherhood and provides insight to the commercialization of war. Also, what it really means to support the war – the aspects of war overlooked or unknown to average US citizens at home.
Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk is set within one day. To help raise spirits the squad is sent to a two-week Victory Tour. They are set to appear at the end of the tour during the halftime show of the Dallas Cowboys thanksgiving game alongside the famed Destiny’s Child. But the government had not relieved these soldiers of their duty. They soon find that they are to return to fight in Iraq.
We are then fluttered with flashbacks of Billy’s past from experiences to decisions, relationships and the deaths of comrades. A new relationship is conjured before he leaves again to fight.
The film adaptation started production in April 2015 starring veterans like Vin Diesel and Chris Tucker with the protagonist Bill Lynn being played by Joe Alwyn.
