Hidden Bodies Plot

Hidden Bodies by Caroline Kepness is quite a fitting book title that readers of the novel’s prequel titled You would appreciate. If you remember from You’s storyline, Joe took the life of at least three people that we know. Joe killed Guinevere’s sex interest Benji in the basement of the New York bookstore. Joe killed Guinevere’s best friend Peach during Peach and Guin’s trip to Rhode Island. Lastly, Joe claimed the life of Guinevere after she fell off the pedestal of perfection that he built for her in his mind. Joe is smart enough to know that he can’t exactly leave the bodies just lying around. So I’m sure you are smart enough to fill in the blanks.

At the start of the novel, Joe has a new love interest called Amy Adam. Amy works with Joe at the same Mooney Rare and Used books bookstore from the first novel. In Joe’s eyes, Amy is a complete upgrade from Guinevere for multiple reasons, including her lack of social media presence. If you were to look superficially at Amy and Joe’s relationship, the couple would appear quite happy and in love. Joe and Amy even share a strange hobby of collecting every copy of the book Portnoy’s Complaint that they could get their hands on. Joe would stack their collection of the yellow books neatly on bookshelves in the store basement. Portnoy’s Complaint is a book Joe and Amy love to read together repeatedly from start to finish. Joe also was quite fond of having intercourse with Amy near their wall of yellow. A match made in heaven, I’m sure you are thinking to yourself. Unfortunately, Joe and Amy’s romance ends when Amy decides to break up with Joe and move to Los Angelos. Amy even makes the extra effort to be petty and take their collection of Portnoy’s Complaint along with her. Joe,(being the mentally healthy boyfriend that he is) decides to chase Amy to Los Angelos to rekindle their love. Joe does this despite his hatred for Los Angelos and the city’s culture.

After Joe arrives in Los Angelos, he begins to work in a bookstore(big surprise) and quickly blends into the Los Angelos culture that he hates. Joe, like the average Joe, lives in a nearby apartment. He satisfies his sexual cravings with a gossip website columnist who lives in the same building. However, Joe quickly loses interest in her afterward. During Joe’s short time in Los Angelos, he decides to leave the man he was behind and start over as a new man. In a poetic sense, he buried the old Joe in his mind. Joe later starts a new life with his new girlfriend, Love Quinn. Love’s parents are wealthy owners of a successful grocery franchise. Love’s brother Forty is a drug-addicted man who often annoys Joe. While dealing with temptations from his old self, Joe makes a genuine effort to turn not to harm Love Quinn or anyone else. Sadly for the new Joe, he quickly learns that hidden bodies do not always remain hidden.
