“The Spy” / “La Espia” (Spanish) written by Paulo Coelho author of the 1988 classic, “The Alchemist” and the “Adultery”. “The Spy” brings back to life the experiences of arguably one of our first feminist, Mata Hari. We take a dive into Mata Hari’s mysterious yet exciting but still tragic life.
Mata was an exotic dancer who due to her line of work became a confidant of many powerful men. Though the evidence surrounding her arrest seems scarce and sketchy, Hari was unable to prevent herself from suffering the greatest penalty of the French military intelligence.
Mata was executed in a Paris Prison. One of her last requests was for writing materials to write some letters. Mi5 has gradually revealed their files on Mata Hari providing Coelho with tons of information for his novel. Allowing him to create a fictional memoir of Mata Hari’s life leading up to her questionable execution.
Coelho ventured to re-create the letter written by Mata Hari’s lawyer, Edouard Clunet. Which explains and visualizes a view of Europe at War and to what extent suspicion can play in a fatal consequence.
