Introduction

The series Obsidian, like the Men in Black, has shown it is quite possible for aliens to walk amongst humans without their realization. This veil of ignorance is exactly what becomes torn when a 17-year-old girl moves to West Virginia. What first appears to be another “Hot guy next door” type of story, takes an extraterrestrial turn that makes it a truly unique novel.

Katy, a young 17-year-old moves to West Virginia before her senior year begins. She travels with preconceived ideas about what her time in West Virginia will be like. She expects her days to be filled with the strong local accents, inconsistent internet access, among other disappointing things. When Katy meets her new neighbors, Daemon and Dee Black, it’s a welcoming surprise. In her attempts to become friends with the siblings, she finds Dee easy to get along with. However, Daemon obnoxious personality is very hard for Katy to stand, though she remains curious about him.

When Daemon’s attitude gets the best of Katy, the two get into an argument. Katy is angered to the point she loses track of her surroundings and doesn’t notice the truck coming at her. Daemon transforms into a stream of light and rescues Katy. After this incident, Daemon reveals that Dee and himself are a race of aliens called Luxen. Katy learns that Dee and Daemon’s friends Ash, Adam, and Andrew are also Luxen. She also learnt that Luxen’s are born in three. Katy then questions why it is just Dee and Daemon. Daemon eventually reveals to Katy that government actually provides Luxen’s with housing finances. The catch is that they are not allowed to interact with humans often. He goes on to explain that this was what lead to the undoing of their sibling Dawson. Dawson was involved in a relationship with a girl by the name of Bethany which ended in the two being executed. Daemon was trying to save his only remaining sibling Dee from this fate which is the source of arrogant behavior.

The Luxens have enemies as well, a group called Arum chases them tirelessly in an attempt to steal their powers. Katy comes to realize that she was in fact attacked by an Arum earlier in the novel. The Arum attacked Daemon in a car while he is driving Katy home. He is forced to kill one of them using his powers, while Katy uses Obsidian to vanquish another.

Daemon later makes out with Katy, where she becomes marked by him. When Luxen’s use their powers to close to humans, their powers leave a trace on them which causes them to glow. Katy is now a target due to the traces of Luxen energy left on her. This opens a new chapter in her life in West Virginia, which is far more than the quiet town she expected.
