In If I Stay our seventeen-year-old Mia wakes during a snowing morning, her parents and other family are busy celebrating the holiday with chocolate chip pancakes. While the rest of her immediate family decided what they could do with this free time – Mia already has other plans. She scans the morning paper looking for news about her boyfriend Adam and his musical band. Mia was also gifted musically and is an exceptional cello musician. She recently auditioned for Juilliard and considering the comments given from one of the judges it seems she will surely be accepted. Mia also wants to attend her bf concert tonight but still practice her cello with a pianist. Normally she would do this at school but today she has some extra time.

Mia family decides to embark on a trip; where they will visit friend and family, attend a massive bookstore then finally go by Mia’s grandmother to fish and enjoy some dinner. Everyone wanted to listen to something different on the radio because of their different personalities, with mom and dad tastes being exact opposites. Teddy her brother wanted SpongeBob and Mia obviously desired the soothing feel of the classical music. All Mia did, was close her eyes after she had found Beethoven’s Cello Sonata Number 3, But then her life was forever changed!
