Previously published as Rosewater, Then They Came for Me, A Family’s Story of Love, Captivity, and Survival is a 384-page memoir of Maziar Bahari, a journalist. The book relates his experience as he left London in 2009 to cover an election.
As he kissed his pregnant wife goodbye and assured her would be back home soon from his trip, little did he know what challenges he was about to face. He is captured by the Iranians and spends the next three months in the most devastating of conditions in Iran’s most notorious prison. He endures countless physically and mentally brutal interrogations at the hand of a man he could only identify by his smell, Rosewater.
He draws strength from his memories of loved ones, some of which whom were also tortured before such as his father and sister. In Maziar’s worst moments, he could be heard muttering their names repeatedly. He also sincerely hoped he would make it back home before the birth of his child.
Then They Came For Me is a riveting true story, which offered insight into Iran’s government and the changes in their regime over the past seventy years. It is of course, also a well-written story of how important family is especially in trying times and change.
