Of Mice and Men is a book by John Steinbeck and was published in 1937, it relates a story of George Milton, (who was very intelligent though uneducated) and Lennie Small whom was strong and built well but ‘is not brilliant’. They were two migrant workers in the field on a plantation located in Canada during the Great Depression. They both had dreams of eventually owning a piece of land and being able to settle down. Lennie’s version consisted of him tending to soft
rabbits on a farm.
Both Lennie and Milton were refugees and fleeing from the valleys of California. This is where Lennie’s obsession to touch soft objects caused him to be accused of rape after he grabbed a woman’s dress and refused to release it. It is evident that they are both excellent friends; Milton being Lennie’s protector. The theme of friendship is prevalent in this book.
‘Of mice and men’ is based on Steinbeck’s experiences as a bindlestiff. The title was chosen from a poem by Robert Burns “To a Mouse”. It goes, “The best-laid schemes o’ mice an’ men / Gang aft agley.”
