Same Kind Of Different As Me Book PDF Summary

This is the heartwarming yet heartbreaking story of how two men, who had so little in common, became best friends. The story is told from the perspective of both men. Highlighting the stark contrasts in their lives and also the events which brought them together.

The story’s roots begin in the twentieth century. Denver Moore, a black man who grew up poor on a Cotton Plantation. Denver grew up working for white plantation owners. Due to the system of racism, set in place back then, Denver did not have access to education. Ron Hall also grew up on a Cotton Plantation, his experience was quite different due to him being a young white boy. Ron was given the opportunity to attend college, where he met his soon to be wife Deborah.

After marriage, the couple went on to raise a family together. Ron left his job in the field of banking, to pursue a career as an art dealer. His work as an art dealer proved to be very lucrative, resulting in Ron quickly becoming fixated on materialistic goals. Deborah was on a completely opposite path, she walked steadfastly down the path of spirituality. This was no surprise as Deborah was a devout Christian woman before the couple married. However, due to the different directions in which they lead their lives, the couple drifted apart. This lead to Ron having an extramarital affair, but when Deborah became aware of the affair she didn’t leave him. Instead, she chooses to put her relationship in the hands of God, and also to put greater effort into her marriage. After few years, Deborah’s devotion to God and her marriage reap rewards, as her marriage and faith were now stronger than ever before.

During the time Ron has pursued his career as an art dealer, Denver had finally left the Cotton Plantation. Denver caught a ride on a train to Dallas, where he, unfortunately, ended up living on the streets. The cope with his living circumstances, Denver turned to a life filled with narcotics. Denver later turned to theft to survive, which caused him to serve a 10-year prison sentence. After Denver completed his sentence, he once again returned to living on the streets. There he gained the reputation of a hostile and temperamental homeless man, but unknown to others this was just a defense mechanism.

Around this time Deborah convinced Ron, to do volunteer work for the homeless community. Ron despite detesting homeless people agreed, for the sake of pleasing Deborah. Deborah had a prophetic dream that she was fated to meet a poor but wise man. Denver suited the profile of this character, and this caused her to make Ron befriend him. Ron and Denver were opposed to the friendship at first, but they both surprisingly had a positive effect on each other.

Denver foresaw the death of Ron’s wife, long before she was diagnosed with cancer. After she was diagnosed, Denver and Ron prayed fervently hoping God could save her from the disease. In this time, Ron and Denver’s bond grew stronger, while unfortunately, Deborah’s body grew weaker. Ron even gave Denver a job in delivery. Denver was put in charge of the delivery of very precious items. Ron feared that Denver would sell the items for his own profit. When Ron recognized that Denver, did not betray his trust, their friendship grew even stronger.

Eventually, Deborah did pass, where she was given a beautiful funeral. A shelter was renamed in Deborah Hall’s Shelter, in honor of her work with the homeless community. The book goes on to cover Ron & Denver’s growing bond and also faith in Christ, as they cope with Deborah’s passing together.
