The Forest of Hands and Teeth Book Book PDF Summary

The Forest of Hands and Teeth opens in the setting, of a village completely enclosed by a forest. The forest, however, has been overrun by the undead also called the Unconsecrated in the novel. To protect the villagers from the threat of the undead, a fence was erected around the village. Guards were positioned along the interior of the fence, to keep watch for incoming threats. The guards were also given the responsibility of maintaining in the fence, in the case it was damaged due to any event.


Mary lives along with what remains of her family, within the village. Mary’s father had ventured into the forest a few months ago and has yet to return. Mary’s mother often told her heard stories about the ocean while she was growing up. Mary, however, has never seen the ocean. Mary’s mother becomes infected, after a group of Unconsecrated escaped the forest. Jed is forced, to remove their mother from the house, for the family’s safety. He has also sent Mary to join the Sisterhood of nuns.

The Sisterhood is not only a religious body, but also the villages governing body. While at the Cathedral, Mary becomes the center a love rectangle. Mary has been proposed to by Harry but is in love with his younger brother Travis. Mary shared her dream, to one day see the ocean, with Travis. Travis happens to be engaged with Mary’s best friend, while Harry’s sister is Jed’s wife. Despite really being in love with Travis, Mary agreed to Harry’s proposal. Mary secretly hopes within her heart, that somehow she can be with Travis.

During Mary’s wedding, the village siren goes off. The siren indicates the Unconsecrated are heading for the village. Jed, Mary, Harry, Travis, Jed’s wife Beth, a young boy Jacob and Mary’s dog all escape the village into the forest. The group discovers an abandoned village while exploring the forest. The group stays in a house within the village, which is later attacked by the zombie-like creatures. Ultimately Travis becomes infected as the group escaped the village. Mary as a final act of her feelings for Travis beheads him before he becomes an Unconsecrated.

The group once again is attacked by a group of undead. Most of the group, unfortunately, becomes infected. Jed sacrifices himself so that Mary can escape. As Mary makes a run for it, she looks back to witness Jed, vanishes among the undead.

Mary runs for her life, but quickly encounters a cliff edge. She ends up falling over the edge and landing into a river. Her body is washed away, by the strong current. Later, she is discovered on the shore, of a nearby beach, by a mysterious man.
