Things Fall Apart Book PDF Summary
Things Fall Apart is about the life of the leader, Okonkwo in a created fictitious village of Umuofia. Its citizens are called Igbo. The story is set in the 19th century and is split into two parts. The first and foundational element discusses Okonkwo’s village, family, customs, and traditions in Igbo. Due to a complication, Okonkwo was banished from his lands for 7 years.
Next, during his banishment European missionaries aggressively impose their belief upon the citizen of Umofia.
These two parts mesh together when Okonkwo returns and discovers an ‘invasion’ of the way of life and traditions he was accustomed to.
But the Invaders finally went too far and the villagers retaliate! As a result, the leader of the white government held some of the perpetrators in confinement. He further insults them by wiping and shaving them. These actions then resulted in an uprising and Okonko advocates war!
To avoid an uprising, messengers for the Europeans tried to stop the meeting but Okonkwo, who has had enough, beheads one of them. Expecting his fellow villagers to follow suit he is distraught when they allow the remaining representative to go free. Okonowo realizes that his once proud, courageous people are not going to fight even save themselves.
When Okonkwo is sent for to be reprimanded they find him hung in an obvious suicide attempt which is against the teachings of Igbo.
