Tommy Stubbins discovers an injured squirrel who has been attacked by a hawk. Matthew Mugg, a friend of Tommy, directs him to Doctor Dolittle assuring, Tommy that the doctor will be able to help. Tommy habitually checks the doctor’s home, eager for his return. One night Tommy unexpectedly collides with the doctor during a passing storm. After they stumble and fall, the doctor guide Tommy into his home.

Tommy is quite surprised when he notices the variety of animals housed on the property. His curiosity also peaks when he sees the doctor conversing with the animals. After this, Tommy begins to spend his days with the doctor. He becomes familiar with some of the animals, such as; Polynesia, an African parrot, and a duck named Dab-Dab. Tommy also learns from Polynesia how to speak with animals.

Eventually, Tommy receives permission from his parents to become a full-time assistant to the doctor. Dr. Dolittle and Tommy pick the location of their next adventure by playing the blind game. The doctor tells Tommy to close his eyes and point to a spot on the map. Spidermonkey Island becomes their next destination as Tommy opens his eyes. This island is one the doctor has deeply wanted to visit and is also the home of a renowned naturalist named Long Arrow.

Bumpo, an African prince who was studying across the pond returns, and invites himself onto the trip. The doctor decides to also invite Luke the Hermit, along as well, but he, unfortunately, discovers that learn Luke is in jail for the charge of murder. The doctor communicates with Bob, Luke’s dog, that happens to be a witness of the crime. The doctor finds a way to join Luke’s trial, and there, the doctor translates Bob’s testimony to the jury. People have mixed reactions to the unusual spectacle but, eventually, they come to trust in Dr. Dolitte’s ability. Luke released from his charges, and Dr. Dolittle, Polynesia, Tommy, and Bumpo begin their journey across the sea to Spidermonkey Island in search of Long Arrow.

Along the journey, Dr. Dolittle discovers stowaways on board the boat. The stowaways have eaten into their food supply after the stowaways are dropped off the crew depart for Spain. They anchor on an island known for hosting bullfighting events. There Dr. Dolittle makes a wager with the bullfighters. The conditions of the wager are made very clear if the doctor can defeat the bullfighters at their practice, they can no longer carry out bullfighting on the island. The doctor uses his skills to persuade the bulls into following his plan. The bulls are eager the follow the doctor’s idea and a large number of bulls are outwitted on the field creating a fantastic show for the audience. Successful in their wager the Dr. Dolitle’s crew departs with a fully stocked ship.

Tragically, Tommy awakes floating on a small piece of board from the ship after the wreckage, none of the crewmates insight. Thankfully sea animals come to the aide of Tommy and help him to find the others who also managed to survive the ship’s destruction. The sea animals also act as guides for the crew to Spidermonkey Island. On the island, a friendly beetle tells them about Long Arrow’s location along with his tribe the Popsipetels. The entire is trapped within the mountain of the island and Dr.Dolittle begins his journey to save the naturalist.
